Buying at Auction

Live internet bidding is available via www.EasyLiveAuction.com. All prospective bidders must familiarise themselves with our NOTICE TO BUYERS

Our auctions are available to view in person on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday preceding the auction and on the morning of each sale. Catalogues are available from our office one week before the sale, or may be viewed online from the Saturday preceding the auction.

 

Condition Reports

We recommend that anyone wishing to leave a bid, who has not viewed in person, obtain a condition report. We can provide these by telephone or email.

Export of Goods

Buyers intending to export goods should check whether an export or import licence is required. Some endangered species may be prohibited, for example elephant ivory.

Absentee Bids

For those who cannot attend the auction we will bid on your behalf. We will endeavour to purchase the lot(s) at the lowest price possible subject to any other bids or reserves.

Telephone Bids

Subject to our discretion we will execute telephone bids on lots with a minimum estimate of £1,000. Telephone bids are accepted on a ‘first come first served’ basis.

 

Postage Packing & Shipping

Overseas Buyers:  We DO NOT provide a postal service outside of the UK.

UK Buyers:  Small Items (Jiffy Bag Size) ONLY by Royal Mail ‘Signed For’ service.

Selling at Auction

 

How do I get my items valued for Auction?

Stride & Son will provide you with a free auction valuation which can be obtained in one of the following ways:

Digital images can be sent to directly through to enquiries@stridesauctions.co.uk or images can be added to the contact page. We will respond as soon as possible and provide an auction estimate. When emailing images please remember to provide a contact telephone number.

Alternatively you may bring your item(s) directly to the saleroom in Chichester. An appointment is not necessary as there is usually a valuer at the saleroom. However an appointment may be needed to see one of our consultants, please telephone us to arrange this.

If your property is too large to bring to us, or you are unable to send images, we can arrange for a valuer to visit your home to carry out a valuation. Stride & Son cover the whole of West Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey but are happy to consider calls further afield, please contact us for further details.

 

Delivering Items

The item(s) that you wish to sell should be delivered to our saleroom during the relevant time frame for inclusion in our next available auction. If you are unable to deliver your items personally we can organise carriage to the saleroom. The fee for this service if £50 per hour (plus VAT).

 

Consigning Lots

We will always provide a receipt when you leave items with us. This will form your contract with Stride & Son and will provide you with a unique reference number which should be quoted in any communication with us. All sales are subject to Stride & Son’s Conditions of Sale.

 

Types of Reserves

Fixed. The auctioneer will recommend a reserve to ensure the lot(s) will not be sold for less than the agreed amount.

Auctioneers discretion. The lot(s) will be sold at a price which is at the discretion of the auctioneer. This means you are giving permission for your goods to be sold at up to 10% less than the agreed reserve.

No reserve. The lot(s) will be sold for the highest bid received on the day. Reserves below £50 will not be accepted.

 

Auction Costs

Commission Rate: is 15% plus VAT (18% inclusive) of the hammer price.

Minimum Charge: Each vendor is subject to a minimum charge of £10 plus VAT per consignment.

Lotting Fee: Each lot is subject to a lotting fee of £2 plus VAT.

 

What happens after the Auction?

We will send you a sale result notification within a few days of the auction. This will list hammer price achieved for each lot. Payment is made by cheque 21 days after the sale date (providing we have received full payment from the buyer for that lot). You will also receive a settlement statement detailing the charges.

Unsold Lots: If any lot(s) remain(s) unsold the auctioneers will write to you and recommend that either the lot is re-offered with an amended estimate and/or reserve, or alternatively we may request you to collect the unsold item(s).
